Course Description:
This course introduces the student to advanced engineering concepts. Using CAD tools, topics studied include descriptive geometry, cams and gears, threads and fasteners, precision dimensioining, working drawings, and advanced 3D modeling. Mathematics, science and mechanical engineering concepts involving the design of cams and gears are reinforced in this course.
Students will participate in group problem solving activities which mimic industry.
Here is a list of the units we will cover: Descriptive Geometry - Surface developments Cams and Gears Threads and Fasteners Precision Dimensioning Advanced Engineering Concepts
We will use Auto CAD and SolidWorks throughout this course.
Structure
Students are expected to come to class on time and ready to learn. The class is set up for an office like atmosphere. Instruction is given in a variety of styles with the majority being demonstration. Students will listen to the explanation of the unit, watch the demonstration and practice the skill. Students will then work at their own pace through a series of drawings. Interim reports will be sent home every 3 weeks as per the schedule on page 1 of the student planners. I would like to stay in touch with all parents who have e-mail access to give them more frequent progress reports.
Quizzes, Tests and Exams: Every Friday students will take a short (25 question) quiz covering the material from that week and to prepare them for the VoCATS (Vocational State Exam) test at the end of the semester. After each unit students will take a test to assess their understanding of the material. At the end of the first semester students will take a mid-term exam. The final exam will be a two part exam consisting of the VoCATS test and my exam. Both will be administered during the final week of class.
Policies
Students are expected to behave in an appropriate manner and show respect to me and the other students. Behavior disruptive to the learning environment and disrespect will not be tolerated. Students could be assigned to detention, CARE or suspended.
We have a lab that is set up with some very nice computers and industry standard software. Therefore, it is very imperative that all students abide by the Acceptable Use Policy in their planner. Students who have their computer privileges revoke will suffer academically, especially in this class, where the majority of the work is on the computer |
